The men's national basketball team of the United States competed at the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona, Spain, and won the gold medal. Nicknamed the "Dream Team", it was the first American Olympic team to include active professional players from the National Basketball Association (NBA).
At the time, it was widely believed that Jordan did not like Thomas because he was seen as the "ring leader" of the Detroit Pistons of the late 1980s and early 1990s; nicknamed the "Bad Boys", the team employed overtly physical tactics against Jordan in the NBA Playoffs. In his 2012 book Dream Team, author Jack McCallum quotes Jordan as saying to Team USA selection committee member Rod Thorn, "Rod, I don't want to play if Isiah Thomas is on the team".To help the team prepare for the Olympics, a squad of the best NCAA college players was formed to scrimmage them. USA Basketball selected players whose style of play, it hoped, would resemble that of the Europeans the Dream Team would face. Members included the penetrating guard Bobby Hurley, all-around players Grant Hill and Penny Hardaway, outside shooter Allan Houston, and the tough Chris Webber and Eric Montross.Hill and Hardaway would play for the 1996 national team, and Houston on the 2000 team. The Dream Team first gathered in La Jolla, California, in late June, astounding and intimidating the collegians who watched them practice. However, on June 24, the Dream Team lost to the NCAA team, 62–54, after underestimating the opposition. The teams played again the following day, with the Olympians winning decisively in the rematch. Some of the college players visited Jordan's hotel room afterward and asked their hero for his personal items as souvenirs. The Dream Team made its international debut on June 28 at the Tournament of the Americas, an Olympic qualifying event in Portland, Oregon.

How five North Carolina baseball stars are living out their USA Baseball dream ... There’s something about homegrown pride that makes putting on a Team USA jersey even more meaningful.
It’s rooted in hometown fields, weekend travel tournaments, childhood dreams, and years of looking up to players who once stood where they now stand. At the heart of this story is a strong NC State connection is none other than the “Wolfpack Trio”. Dudan, Marohn, and Nance—teammates in Raleigh—have each carved their path to this moment.Marohn echoed those sentiments, having known that being selected for the Collegiate National Team Training Camp was a lifelong goal. “It's always been a dream to play for the Collegiate [National] Team, and just being here with all these guys who are the top players is truly a dream, and it's unbelievable,” Marohn said. The two of them are joined by another Wolfpack arm, Nance, whose journey to Team USA began at a young age through the Prospect Development Pipeline (PDP), one of Major League Baseball and USA Baseball’s premier player development programs. “I’ve been here before during my earlier years for PDP events, but nothing compares to what I’m doing now. Back then, I’d come here as a little kid and dream about putting this jersey on.Whether it’s Dudan returning for a second stint, Nance reliving his PDP memories, or Bagwell achieving the goals he once only dreamed about, each player shares a common thread: they’re proof that North Carolina baseball talent can rise to the national stage and stay there. More than just top-tier athletes, these five players are now role models, examples of what can happen with hard work and opportunity. And as they compete for a spot on the final Collegiate National Team roster, they carry with them not only the pride of their state, but the hopes of the next generation of baseball players who are dreaming of their moment in the stars and stripes.

For more than three decades, the NBA has made its mission exporting basketball to the world. In 1992, as a “Dream Team” of NBA players dominated the Olympics in Barcelona, Spain, and became a billboard for the league’s star power globally, the league had just 21 international players.

What do international basketball operations do?’” Troy Justice, the NBA’s senior vice president and head of international basketball, said in an interview. “And we say we make dreams come true. His enormous wingspan and potential made Maluach, who was born in South Sudan and raised in Uganda, the youngest player at last summer’s Paris Olympics, playing for the South Sudanese national team while sharing the court with U.S. stars such as Kevin Durant and Bam Adebayo.
The 1992 U.S. Olympic Men’s Basketball Team, coined the Dream Team, is considered the best basketball team of all time.
On the court, perhaps the only intrigue in pool play came in the second game, where Chicago Bulls teammates Jordan and Scottie Pippen both wanted to guard Croatian star Toni Kukoc, who had been drafted by the Bulls but had yet to join the team. Kukoc made just 2 of 11 shots and scored only four points in a 103-70 American win. Off the court, the players drew throngs of fans whenever they ventured out in Barcelona. “It was,” said Daly, “like Elvis and the Beatles put together.
